Visa4UK site down?

I've been trying to get to the www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk site for a few days, but keep on getting error messages. They were doing scheduled maintenance until Monday at noon, apparently, but I'm still unable to access it now, on Tuesday morning. This is particularly annoying, since I need to apply for my EC as soon as possible.

Is anyone else having similar problems? Are there any other ways to apply, or am I stuck until their IT department gets its act together?

Found a news item on the NZ high commission website saying that it's now down until Wednesday. Am I out of line in thinking that it's ridiculous for the single point of application for many UK visas to be completely inaccessible for a week? Don't they have backup systems they can switch over to while they do this maintenance?
