Ancestry Visa

Post by mrssjlaney » Sat Feb 02, 2008 10:14 pm

Hi I am asking this question on behalf of my friend.

It is just a quick one.

Can you apply for the Ancestry Visa through your great grandparents?

Thank you for your help in advance.

I don't think it would work. Can you provide a timeline of his/her ancestry?

She is Australian born age 28.

Her dad is Hungarian and mother Australian. She has applied for Hung. passport but 8 months on still waiting.

It is her mother's grand parents on her mother's side. I can't get dates just yet as she's out. But from our chat before I think it's Ireland from just before the 1900's.

It's a long shot I know but it was just a thought.

That was a quick reply!

Were her parents married when she was born? Has she applied for Hungarian citizenship and is just waiting, or they haven't replied to her since submitting the application and she doesn't know whether or not she qualifies? Did her father renounce his citizenship?

As for a UK ancestry visa...if her grandparents and mother were born abroad, she doesn't qualify, basically. I hope someone else can explain in full, but the timeline, I believe, is too far back.

Sakura is right - in order to qualify for an UK ancestry visa, one has to be a Commonwealth citizen with at least one grandparent born in the UK (or in what is now the Republic of Ireland before 1922, since this was then part of the UK). The line can be legitimate or illegitimate (but of course it has to be able to be proved to the satisfaction of the entry clearance officer.) Having a great-grandparent born in the UK does not entitle one to the visa, unfortunately.

Once she has got her Hungarian passport, see also European citizens and Worker Registration Scheme.
