Tier 2 Extension - Apply 28 days before Expiry?

Hi,

I am looking to extend my Tier 2 General visa with the same employer in the same SOC. My visa expires in August 2017, but I want to apply for it now to avoid any unexpected surprises in change in rules or experienced salary requirements in April 2017.

I rang UKVI on 0300 1232241 and they said I can't apply 28 days before the expiry of my current visa. I can't find any reference to 28 days in the guidelines, it just says to apply before expiry. My employer is ready to issue me with a new COS for extension and I want to apply ASAP.

Has anyone applied for an extension recently well in advance?
