Spain: Visa and Residence Card for (EU law) beneficiary

Does anyone have any experience applying for a residence visa to Spain and then Residence Card for a non-traditional family member of an EU citizen? This is for somebody who would be classed as a beneficiary under Directive 2004/38/EC.
