switch from student visa to work permit

Hi,
I've just graduated in Bsc(hons). I wonder once I got my work permit, can I apply leave to remain in UK or I have to back to my own country to get entry clearance?

If my passport is valid till 2011 and my work permit is given 5 years; which means till 2013, do I need to renew my passport before apply for working visa? or it actually not a matter?
