Not true, the only exemptions I think are those using EEA rules and old biddies.

You would need to pass the Life in the UK test or ESOL/Citizenship classes (I believe at level 3...)...and this is for everyone, especially spouses of British citizens, since they are partly the reason why tests were introduced.

The main exemptions are;

1. People under 18 or over 65;
2. People with mental or physical disabilities that would make it difficult to take the test

The third exemption, mainly people who are here under the European rules, such as those on EEA permits, and who obtain permanent residency rather than ILR. However, they would in the end need to take and pass the test (or the ESOL/Citizenship classes) to qualify for naturalisation as a British Citizen.
