The truth comes out

Post by William Blake » Fri Mar 28, 2008 12:08 am

The UK's asylum system is "marred by inhumanity" and "not yet fit for purpose", the most comprehensive study ever conducted into its workings has found.

A report published today by the Independent Asylum Commission found the treatment of asylum seekers coming to this country fell "seriously below" the standards of a civilised society.

Every night and every morn
Some to misery are born.
Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight.
Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night

Personally, I am not surprised. I have not dealt with the asylum system, but the caseworkers just seem overworked, pedantic, and completely failing to see anything but details. It is a self-sustained bureaucracy: it may be inefficient, but it cannot be removed.

To be honest, a lot of countries struggle with asylum seekers. You cannot give everybody the treatment and attention that they may deserve, when at the same time you know that there is a good number of (unrecognised) fraudsters amongst them. So this is a difficult situation. Which should not be taken as an excuse for not trying...
