Sponsoring my Australian GF for a Student Visa?

Post by enjoytheview » Sat Mar 29, 2008 2:34 pm

I've been dating my Australian gf for over a year and a half, and she's been back and forth on a tourist visa. However, we are concerned about her getting a prolonged period of time here. She does not currently have a college education and would like to apply to go to school here. However, she does not have the means on her own to show the necessary funds in her bank account to meet the I-20 requirements. My parents and I are willing to sponsor her to go to school, but would like to learn more about this process and if there are any problems we may encounter.

She is looking at going to a community college, i've looked at all the requirements, but I do not know how the sponsorship process works and if they look down upon sponsoring people that you are romantically involved with. I wanted to see if anyone could offer insight on this?

Also, just to note, I do plan on marrying this girl one day, but I would prefer not to rush things and would like her to be here in a normal situation before we take that step.

Thank you in advance.

You can't "sponsor" people for a student visa. If she can't afford to pay for her studies and you really want her to come over as a student, your best option is probably to give her the cash as a gift, so that she can meet the I-20 requirements on her own.

If the immigration guys know she is romantically involved with a US citizen, it's possible (some would say very likely) that her visa application would be denied.

Thanks for the heads up on this.

In regards to the sponsorship part: I have been able to find some literature and applications that suggest that sponsorship is available. It's not something that is normally done because family usually foots the bill. But the stuff i found does state that a "sponsor" can allocate funds for a potential student to meet costs and also provide living facilities.

Can anyone else comment on this?

Thanks,

People get others to pay their studies all the time. In that sense sponsorship is possible. The only problem for you is that if immigration even suspects that your girlfriend is romantically involved with a US citizen, her visa will most likely not be granted.

Thank you for your clarification. I will make sure we proceed with caution.
