All rules, responsibilities and entitlements that applied to holders of GNIB cards remain the same for holders of an IRP. An IRP does not entitled the holder to travel to or live in any other EU country.

Same rules but a different look
The new IRP is designed to conform to EU standards in relation to colour, layout and security features. In addition to the information and photograph contained on the current GNIB Card the IRP will also contain a description of the individual's immigration permission. The new security features will include a microchip that will hold identity information.
Issue of the IRP
For those residing in Dublin who register at the Burgh Quay Registration Office, the card will not be issued on the day of the appointment but will be sent by post.
Therefore it is important that individuals provide their full address including the Eircode when registering.
For those registering outside Dublin, the immigration officer will arrange a date & time to return to collect the IRP.
