ILR - On the basis of being married to a British Citizen

Post by Leela » Thu Apr 17, 2008 8:40 pm

Hello,

I hope somebody can provide me with some information? I was granted ILR in 2005 after marrying in 2004. In 2006 I started a degree course in Scotland but my husband did not accompany me. We have as a consequence of this drifted apart romantically speaking and want to get a divorce although we are still on good terms.

I have been in the UK now for a total of 6 years this April and would at some point like to apply for naturalisation although it is out of my reach financially as I am making my way through my degree just now. Furthermore I am not sure of the implications considering that I will be divorced from my husband. Could someone please tell me how my situation will affect any application for naturalisation or if it has any impact on the ILR that I have now?

Ajahn's Brahm's talk on The Ending of Relationships may be helpful.

Getting divorce shouldn't affect your ILR.

As you have been in the UK for over 5 years, it may not affect your naturalisation application.
