Changes to British Citizenship and ILR - Restrospective???

There are changes coming into effect sometime next year (2009) to British Citizenship & ILR.

Will these changes be retrospective or Not? Will these apply to all currently within UK on HSMP visas, Work Permits or only those coming into UK after the changes have been affected?

A person chooses a country as his/her preferred place of migration over others with one of decision factors being time taken & criteria for citizenship?

Making changes to the same (retrospectively) is almost like cheating migrants. They may keep extending the time required or introducing more stringent criteria almost every year. No one can be absolutely sure of when & how to acquire citizenship - abuse of power by British Govt.

A British passport is no ordinary thing - one can work freely in 30 EEA countries & Switzerland without any work permit and travel to Zillion other countries without any visa.

Changes should be should NOT be retrospective because there are many who choose UK over other destinations based on the citizenship criteria existing at that time?

There may be some legal battles similar to HSMP changes introduced in 2006.

The rule changes will NOT apply EEA nationals - they would like Asians to perform community work - these Brits love seeing Asians doing menial jobs they themselves prefer not to indulge in.

Changes will apply to new arrivals after the new laws are passed, and not to foreigners already living in the UK, so reforms are only likely to affect migrants arriving from 2010.

The Guardian article referenced highlighted that the changes will not be retrospective (i.e., will not apply to those already living here). Of course, this doesn't mean that this will necessarily be the case, though it's heartening to hear...
We'll see what happens!

You won't find a BIA employee on this forum or Jacqui Smith's gang, who I guess, are probably the only ones with inside information at this time.

The articles you referenced states - "Changes will apply to new arrivals after the new laws are passed, and not to foreigners already living in the UK, so reforms are only likely to affect migrants arriving from 2010".

The bill is expected to be tabled in parliament this summer so better wait to hear more news.
