Visa an entry clearence?

May sound like a stupid question, I want to know is entry clearence different to a visa?

For practical purposes you can think of them as the same thing. British nationals (other than British citizens) and non-visa nationals have traditionally had "entry clearances" rather than "visas" put in their passports, when required for entry into or stay in the UK.
