Damaged Passport

Post by Allbrie » Mon Apr 30, 2018 8:49 am

Good morning,

Was wondering if anyone could help with my current passport situation. My dog chewed the corner of my passport (US) the night before I left to move to the U.K. for grad school and the last digit is slightly chewed. It’s been scanning fine and working fine up until last night. My boyfriend and I were coming back to London from Paris and the immigration officer had some issues scanning it. It eventually scanned and I was let in but he suggested replacing it but my visa for school is in it. Is it possible to get a new passport even though my tier 4 is in it? What do I need to do?

This does not add up. If you are in the UK for graduate studies, I assume you are here for longer than six months, in which case your Tier 4 leave will be on a Biometric Residence Permit not on a vignette (sticker) in your passport. The vignette is only valid for 30 days, so you can travel to the UK. It is only people coming to the UK for a maximum six months who have their full Tier 4 leave on a passport vignette.

Arrangements for getting a new passport is something you need to check with the relevant authorities in your home country. If you are in the UK, that would normally be via your embassy.
When you get the new passport, you need to report the details to your Tier 4 sponsor.
I do not give immigration advice. I refer you to Immigration Rules, guidance, other online content and to your sponsor.

Ah, sorry. Yes, I have my BRP card separate from my passport.

So, in replacing my passport I just need to update my passport number with my sponsor? It won't affected my tier 4 visa details to get a new passport?

Yes, and notify the Home Office of the change using the MCC form:

If you need more information or advice, best speak with the international student adviser at your university.
