Confusion - US just married a UK and which VISA?

Hello - Just married last month - I'm not going to move to the UK to be with my husbnad until I get a job in my field. But I need a work permit to apply for jobs.

We just did the Visa online process - Applied for the Settlement Visa for a Spouse. The fee was a lot bigger than I expected and saw that I could have applied for a Long Term Visa.

Did I mess up?

Can this be reversed?

Also, I go back and forth to visit him every couple of weeks. Should I anticipate any entry problems now that we're married and I don't yet have a Visa?

The settlement visa for a spouse is the correct one.

You can work in the UK once you receive the spouse visa without needing a work permit.

You'll want to be sure to enter the UK with the spouse visa within 28 days of the visa start date. If you enter later than that, you won't have enough time in the UK to qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain in two years time.

As far as visiting, as long as you have proof of returning to the US (letter from employer, etc), and that you are aware of the need to apply for the proper visa before settling in the UK, you should be ok to continue with the visits. The key thing is that they want to know that you plan on following the terms of being a visitor intend on returning to the US after the visit.
