Housewife and Naturalisation

Post by db1 » Wed May 28, 2008 6:41 pm

Hi,

I'm a newbie needing some advice.

I'm to apply for my naturalization soon. I'm mainly a housewife and work part-time with a wage under the taxable threshold. My partner is the breadwinner. I have never claimed any benefits. I see that the nat. form asks for one's NI number and do checks with the tax office etc. Should I put 'housewife' or 'part-time xxxxx' in the application form? Will I need to enclose my PAYE slips with my small wage? Should I send in my partners accounts/ accountants letter? Will it count against me for being a homemaker as I don't earn enough financially to contribute to NI/pay taxes etc.??

Being employed is not a criterion for naturalisation (although the form does ask about it), so you will not be disadvantaged on account a small income or part-time work.

Where the form asks, why not say something like "Home duties; part-time [whatever the job is]" or "Home duties, with occasional work as [whatever the job is]"?

You don't need to submit payslips. Does your employer have your NI number? If so, the fact that you are under the tax threshold should show up, should the HO do any checks.

Thanks Christophe. Hoping it's not going to be a problem.

I don't think it will be. You should use the Nationality Checking Service though, since it makes things quicker (it seems and means that you don't need to send off original documents (or go to the expense of having copies signed by a solicitor), and it gives you some peace of mind that your application is in order.

All the best with it! :D
