does living five years on a student visa contribute towards the mandatory 5 year quali peroid for indefinite leave or naturalization ?

A student may only apply for SET(O) after a minimum period of 10 years under Long residence. Unfortunately, previous time as a student may not be included in the 5-year qualifying periods for settlement under eligible employment categories.

You would need to hold ILR before being eligible for naturalisation.
