Travelling between the UK and EU post Brexit as Dual Citizen

Post by tallahassee » Wed Jan 02, 2019 9:19 am

Hi all,

I am an EU national who also holds the UK citisenship since last year and I was wondering whether I will always need to travel to the EU with both passports post Brexit to ensure I can seamlessly pass borders?

Usually I travel just on my EU passport/ID card, but I imagine that would cause problems post Brexit? For example, if I am not 'settled' I may be liable for a visa fee when returning back to the UK and they could question me on what grounds I am coming into the country? The same would could be the case if I traveled to the EU on my UK passport?

Does that mean I will always need to travel with both passports post Brexit, or would it still make sense for me to apply for the EU settlement scheme in spite of being a UK Citizen? Is this even possible?

Has anyone come across this scenario before? I couldn't find any relevant advice on the gov.uk site.

thanks!

UK citizens cannot apply for "settled" status - travelling with both passports may ease passage.
