Council Tax for PR

Post by TerryGH » Mon Apr 01, 2019 7:08 pm

Hello, can anyone advise if council tax is required for PR?
We live in UK for 4 years (my EEA spouse and I). First three years I was registered with the council and paid it in my name. Then we moved to live with our friends who pay council tax in their names only. We do have proof of address, bank statements and any other paperwork, but will we be asked for council tax when applying for PR/ settled status next year? E.g. should we ask for our names to be added in council tax bill or just proof of address is sufficient?

In general, if you have sufficient bank statements and household bills in your name, then you do not necessarily need a council tax bill.

Furthermore, for Settled Status, if your NI records prove your contributions over the 5 relevant years, then you do not need anything at all. Check what documents you might need for PR and Settled status:

Permanent Residence (page 8.): https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... tes-v3.pdf

Settled Status: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/eu-settleme ... -residence
E.g. should we ask for our names to be added in council tax bill
Not familiar with the relevant legislation, but despite not needing it for PR or Settled Status, not having your names in any council tax for a number of years does not and will not look good. Not going to ask why you have not done it yet, but I personally add my names to the council tax ASAP.
My posts express what I believe are the facts, based on the best of my knowledge, about the topics discussed in this forum. They do not constitute immigration advice.

I will have NI contributions over the 5 consecutive years by next year, however my wife wasn't working for part of this period.

There is no reason at all, I just never thought of it until now when started to plan applying for a Settled status in one year.
