UK Citizenship Requirements

Post by willsk22 » Tue Jul 01, 2008 9:23 pm

Hi all,

my missus has ILR appointment on 7th July... hopefully all will go well, I think we have all boxes ticked....

Anyway, can someone answer how long after should we wait for citizenship for her and is this done through Borders/Home office?

Finally, i believe that Russians can have dual citizenship with UK is this possible from anyones experience?

Thanks all,

Will

willsk22, can you say about you? Are you a British Citizen?

And your wife, how long has she been in the UK?

Hi John, yes sorry, I`m British citizen, and a serving soldier, so it`d definitely help with me moving abroad with my job!

OK, thanks for that. I can't comment upon whether Russia has a problem with dual citizenship. Others will need to answer that point. Clearly the UK has no problem with that.

How long has your wife been in the UK? There is a 3-year requirement, so if for example she came here on a 2-year spouse visa she will have about another year to go. If however she was here on say a student visa and then switched to a spouse visa, it might be possible for her to apply for Naturalisation immediately after getting the ILR. Depends of course how long she was on a student (etc) visa before getting the spouse visa.

Also, given the nature of your employment ..... you being in Crown Service .... if your wife has lived with you outside the UK, for example in married quarters in say Germany, then it might be possible for such time to count as being in the UK ... even though she was not physically in the UK.

In short a few more facts needed to come to a firm conclusion when your wife can apply for Naturalisation as British.

This is all from my head, but Russia kind of does have a problem with dual citizenship, well, not much of a problem, more of a dogged stance.

Russia will always consider it's citizens as Russian and will ignore any other citizenships held unless the holder renounces Russian citizenship.

What that means in reality is there is no problem with dual nationality Russian/British unless possibly ur missus entered Russia on her UK passport which would be a daft thing to do anyway.
