Employers liability on repatriation

Post by looplinc » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:07 pm

Does anyone know of any specific UK or EU law pertaining to an employers responsibility to return an employee to "the point of origin" once an assignment in the UK has ended? Since my work permit was handled through the company I could no longer work in the UK

I am a US citizen.
IT was written in my contract with the company, when I took the assignment, that they would pay to return my "shipment of goods" (my household), to my point of origin, which is the US.

They are unwilling to do this. I don't have a copy of the contract (it's been packed).
I am wondering though, if there is a law that requires them to return me home.

This is urgent, since the shipping company now is threatening to auction off my household.

Any advice would be great!

I am not aware of any. If there is, I am sure one of the gurus will point you to the relevant resource. I think this is more a matter of negotiation with your employer and contract law.

The only requirement under immigration legislation that remotely approximates what you are asking about, is the responsibility of ships or their agents to repatriate crewmembers discharged in the UK, or any who desert and are picked up later on. I assume you are not in this category.

I don't know of anything else.
