Self-employed on Tier 5 youth mobility before Tier 2 started

Post by Hopeful_1 » Thu Jul 25, 2019 8:56 pm

Hi everyone,

I am on a Tier 5 Youth Mobility that is valid from August 2017-2019. On the Tier 5 you're allowed to be self-employed so I had self-employed work for April 2019-July 2019 (just finishing up now). I have registered for Self-Assessment with HMRC as I was paid via invoice, but have not filed a return yet.

I was just granted a Tier 2 (general) visa valid from August 14, 2019. I have read that while you're allowed to have supplementary employment on the Tier 2, you have to be paid via PAYE. I don't believe I've violated Tier 2 restrictions as I will have ceased self-employment before the Tier 2 becomes valid. However, my concern is regarding what will happen when I submit my tax return for the self-employed income earned from April-July 2019 while I was still on the Tier 5. I've read that for ILR applications, UKVI will use your NI to cross-check with HMRC and I'm worried that having a Tax Return for the 2019-2020 tax year will be flagged, even though the income was earned before my Tier 2 became valid.

Any thoughts on this? Am I overthinking things?

Thank you
