Is there a limit on the number of attempts to pass this test? and does it affect your current immig status if you fail the test?

No limits, just the cost and time invested....

and does it affect your current immig status if you fail the test?
No, however you need to consider that without passing the test you will not get ILR/nationality.....so, you would need to renew your existing EC until you pass.
