Italian Work permit

Hi,

i hope someone can help me. my company based in the UK are looking to send me to work for one of our clients based in Italy. I will be there for just under a year and will continue to be paid through Uk payroll. I already have a schengen visa (valid until dec 2008) and was wondering what the next steps are in terms of ensuring that i am legal to remain in Italy. Who do i contact to apply for a work permit? and does this need to be done beofre i enter in to italy?

Vick: depends on Where you are from??? I think your company has to apply for a work visa for you!!! I know you need a Permesso di Soggiorno....to live and work in Italy.....and it takes a while, you first need a visa issued by the Italian embassy where you have residence....once in Italy you apply to the Questura (Police/Immigration centre). You apply for this through the talian post and then they call to take your fingerprints....then they issue with a permit! I think once you have a work visa and have submitted your request to the police you can start working. But this all depends on your company? Also within 8 days of arriving in Italy you have to declare your presence to the local police in your area.

You should check out tuttostranieri.it....which is a website similar to this in Italy...they also speak english.

Are you an EEA citizen or not? If not, it will be hard.

Your company better do this for you: without the Permesso di Soggiorno (which can take months to obtain) you can't work. It also depends what your job is: for some categories, there is a yearly quota and this is for now closed.

The Schengen visa is not valid for work: being caught working on such a visa you risk being expelled. You need a national Italian visa (type d).

If you enter the Schengen area through an Italian port there is no need for this:

The stamp on your passport is valied en lieu.

Forgot to mention - i hold an indian passport but have leave to remain in the UK for the next few years.

I'm afraid you'll have to follow the procedure outlined above. Your UK residence is worthless in this case. Either your company does this for you or you might as well drop this offer.

Ok, thanks for the advice - unfortunately i have to do the ground work towards finding out the process and then get back to my compnay so that they can apply for the necessary documents for me

How does the company go about applying for the Permesso di Soggiorno? is this applied for in the UK or from within Italy? Do i also need to apply for a residential permit since i am likely to be there for over 3 months.

Unfortunately the Uk embassy does not offer a visa helpline only a pre-recorded mesage which is little help.

Vick ....I think it will be pretty hard to get a work visa to Italy especially at the moment!!! As they are trying hard to get rid of as many immigrants as possible?

Citizens of India residing in United Kingdom have to apply for a visa to Italy in person at the nearest consulate of Italy in United Kingdom.

But this is what you need for business visa:

Letter from employer addressed to the Italian Consulate General explaining the purpose and duration of the visit. If self-employed, a letter from an accountant, company secretary, solicitor or local Chamber of Commerce. Applicants should also arrange for an invitation from the host Italian company or firm.

While you can only apply for the (visto di lavoro autonomo) (not to sure if this is the one you need) at the Italian Consular Office in your area of residence, you will need to be possess the nulla osta, which can only be obtained in Italy.
