Where best to form a Civil Partnership and then enter UK

Post by Norodnik » Wed Feb 19, 2020 3:46 pm

Rather complicated situation.

Myself (Male UK Citizen) wants to enter into a Civil Partnership with my (Female USA Citizen). As I am currently an Expat working in Saudi it is far too complicated to return to the UK, apply for Fiance Visa and in any case we have not been co-habiting due to my Saudi role so that would not work.

Therefore, we want to enter into a Civil Partnership either in the EU or elsewhere such that, when the time comes, we can both re-enter the UK on a Spousal Visa (as we will already be in a recognized civil partnership).

As mentioned, we cannot enter into a Civil Partnership in the UK as that requires Fiance Visa so which EU Country will allow a UK and USA Citizen to turn up and enter into a civil partnership without living in the Country or having other strings attached.

If none then where in the World makes best sense. If a Civil Partnership is not going to work we would consider getting married instead.

Hi,

Let me first clarify a couple of things for you as it doesn’t sound like the process is clear for you.

You basically have the following options:

1. Partner/spouse visa (apply outside UK)
2. Fiancé (outside UK) and, later, partner/spouse visa (in UK)
3. Marriage visa (apply outside UK, allows you to get married and leave UK within 6 months, can’t apply for spouse visa from UK)

The third option is for someone who doesn’t want to live in UK now, it has less requirements for paperwork.

No matter what you now decide with partnership/marriage, you will need to have the same paperwork in place once you decide to move back to UK: accommodation, language, financial requirement.

I’m not an expert on partnerships, but perhaps you can still get Marriage visit (not Fiancé) visa and get registered in UK. Perhaps, this is the most straightforward option

List of overseas opposite-sex civil partnerships recognised in the UK.

I see that Nevada is on the list. Perhaps a Las Vegas trip may be worth looking into?
