Vary application from Tier 2 extension to ILR via 5 yrs route

Hello,
I am in a similar situation. Can someone please comment if one can submit the varying application even before attending the biometric appointment of the tier 2 extension? I read from another post that an application is not valid until you provide your biometric data and hence the varying application to ILR will not work in that case. Is my understanding correct?

Hello experts,

My three dependants and I have applied for the Tier-2 visa extension under PBS and now waiting for a biometric appointment from UKVCAS. We are planning to vary the application to ILR soon as we will be eligible to apply from 3rd August via 5 years route.

Could someone please confirm me if we can vary the application to ILR at any stage even before attending the biometric appointment for the first application?

And if YES then do I still need to find an appointment for the first application even after varying the application to ILR, or I will be allowed to skip the biometric for the first application and directly book for the varied ILR application instead?
