Wanting to work in the US, unsure if I qualify.

Wanting to work in the US, unsure if I qualify.

Hello All
I'm an Australian and my boyfriend lives in the US, I want to move in with his family and work in the US..
I have finished highschool and in December I will receive a Diploma of fashion and clothing production, I don't think I can apply for a green card with these qualifications?
When researching possible ways to immigrate I found a website http://www.iep.org.au that offers a sponsorship program for about $1300 AU which includes a lot of help and 12 months insurance, and I am thinking this will be the only way to go for me.
If anyone has any better suggestions please let me know?
My boyfriends mother said I should get a visitors visa and apply for a green card in America when I'm there, is this possible?

I cannot see how you qualify for a green card, through either employment/sponsorship, or family. Employment based green-cards are very difficult to get, and you generally need to possess a skill in shortage or high academic credentials.

The IEP sounds like a good option, although do make sure to check it is legit before parting with your money.

As an Australian citizen, you are eligible for the DV Lottery. Although this is further down the line, as the next round isn't until 2009/10.

My advice: get a university degree and apply for an E3 visa (open only to Australians). What is your boyfriend's status in the US?

That site should be legit. There are several similar sites out there for US Citizens, as well as citizens of other countries. Two of the site are BUNAC and Interexchange. Many people use these for the work & travel program because of the extra benefits. However, if you really wanted to, you can apply for the visa yourself at your local US Embassy.

If you are looking for something more long term, you will have to be more qualified, study and then go from there, or get married.

For future planning, if you were to get a Bachelor's degree and were able to get an employment offered in a specailised field, you would qualify for the E-3 visa, which is for Australian nationals only and good for 24-months.

Yeah :( 2009/10 is too far away, but thankyou.

Again this would take too long for our plans, it's far too hard to live so far apart and neither of us can afford the expensive flights back and forth every few months. :( My boyfriend is currently in his last year of highschool, living with his parents on a military base.

If you're struggling with an immigration issue and you need to consult a lawyer, make
sure you consult multiple lawyers. It's worth the money. One of my friends recently had
to return to his country because his lawyer totally screwed up his case and made his status
illegal in US. My friend then consulted several other lawyers and realized that the first
lawyer was a crook, even though the guy was licensed.
So always seek multiple opinions first, then hire a good lawyer. It costs a bit but it's
worth it, esp. if your case is complicated. You can get multiple opinions easily on
http://www.lawbench.com so I would suggest you use something like that. Then hire the
lawyer you like.

Or you could look in to F-1 (student) visa....

Dear You,

If your boyfriend and you agree to get married within 90 days of your coming to America, you should be able to apply for a fiancée visa. I never inquired into it, but it's right up your alley.

Short of that, I don't know.

Check the fiancé visa!
