Renting in Melbourne??

Hi I move to Melbourne in October on a 1year working Visa with my girlfriend. When we arrive we plan to stay with friends and rent an appartment.

We have references from the UK, and money in savings, however we will not have jobs immediately on arrival in Melbourne. Does anyone know of any difficulties we may face trying to rent, or should we be ok.

I play to arrive and go an see appartments immediately. I don't see why having a job is such a big issue, as we may plan to arrive and not work (although we will)

Just hearing some scare mongering at the moment, and having looked at appartments in the area there look like there are plenty avaliable...
