Pre-settled status and NI

Hi dear members,

I have applied for EU Family Permit for both my wife and my mother.
They both got approved and they came to the UK couple of days ago.

I was wondering what should be my next step for them:
a. Applying for NI.
b. Applying for pre-settled status.

a. They can only have a NINo if they are going to work.

b. asap. From 1 Janaury 2021 they might be asked to prove they have pre-settled status to be able to rent, use the NHS, work, study.
