Hello. I'm filling in the application for my 3 year old daughter to get her the British citizenship. Both parents are Italian and got permanent settled status last year. I have a question about the marriage certificate please. My husband and I got married in Italy before our daughter was born. So we have an Italian marriage certificate, not registered in the UK. At the question whether the parents were married when the child was born, shall I answer yes? If yes, would an Italian marriage certificate be accepted or should I get it translated? Thank you very much in advance. Elvira.

Where was your daughter born?

If the mother is applying on behalf of the child, marriage certificate is not needed.

If you are married in Italy and your marriage is considered as legal in Italy, select married.

Myself and my wife got married in UK (religious only). Our marriage is not registered in UK so we are considered unmarried as per UK law. However, we still selected “married” because we consider ourselves married. Did not have any issues. This question will have no impact on child’s BC registration.

My wife (mother of the child) applied on behalf of the child. No marriage certificate needed.
