Naturalisation for EEA, Settled Status - Name Spelling (transliteration) and Documents submitted

I am about to submit my application for Naturalisation using EEA IRL (Settled Status).

I have two questions in particular.

1. Spelling of name
- My name has an ö (let's say Möller)
- Passort in the name field says Möller
- MRZ of my EU passport spells this as Moeller
- For banking, employment and tax I use Moller which is my preferred spelling
- The ICAO confirms that both o and oe are acceptable transliterations of ö

My settled status uses the form Moeller as per the MRZ. To not create an issue, I also used Moeller for the B1 and Life in the UK test.

However, my bank statements, tax record, etc all say Moller.

I am considering taking the following approach in the application:
1. Personal Information: Möller
2. Add Other Name: Moeller. Reason: Alternative spelling used in MRZ of passport. Transliteration option as per ICAO. Used for purposes of Settled Status, B1 and Life in UK Test.
3. Add 2nd Other Name: Moller. Reason Preferred, alternative spelling based on acceptable transliteration as per ICAO. Used for employment, banking and tax purposes.

Additionally, I plan on uploading a letter with links to guidance, documents and explanation.

Do you think this is acceptable.

2. Documents as "Evidence that you are considered permanently resident in the UK"
- 5 years of bank statements and residential mortgage statements
- Council tax bills (supplementary)

3. Documents for "If you were granted indefinite leave to remain under the EU Settlement Scheme"
- 5 years of P60, P45 and paysplips
- supplementary information, print out of National Insurance Record confirming full year of contributions for 5 years.



Am I ok with the above, especially with the name? Thanks in advance

This is a bit tricky - the name on your naturalisation certificate must match the name on your national passport otherwise HMPO will not issue a British passport - so MOELLER would be the one to go with.

The Home Office suggested giving all three names as follows Möller as the given name, and Moeller and Moller as other names together with an explanation.

The reason I am also adding payslips and P45s is that I changed jobs and do not have a P60 for one of the years. I do however have continuous employment as evidenced by P45 and payslips.

Might be best to state in your note which name you expect to see on your naturalisation certificate.
When it comes to HMPO they will play hard ball if the name is not the same as in your national passport.

Absolutely, this is why I am favouring this approach to be honest. I have a note with the references and a detailed explanation. Additionally the name as per my passport is Möller so technically I am following the guidelines exactly.

Name as per original EU Passport: Möller
1st alias: Moeller as per MRZ and which is acceptable as per ICAO handbook.
2nd alias: Moller which also is acceptable as per ICAO handbook. Only used in Bank, education ,etc.

2.7 This includes names containing numbers, symbols and punctuation marks (Diacritical characters and accent characters). Due to IT considerations, the British passport will not be issued with a name using numbers, symbols or punctuation marks other than hyphens or apostrophes; or any diacritical marks such as accents.
2.8 Our specifications meet the passport standard set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). There are alternative spellings of names to take this into account, known as transliterations. See the acceptable list of transliterations as agreed by the ICAO.
2.10 Where an applicant has a name including the diacritical characters listed above, the system must be updated to show the transliteration and a case note must be added to explain the change. Similarly, if an applicant completes their application form with any diacritical characters in the name transliterated as above, but their documents show the corresponding diacritical character, this should be accepted without any supporting evidence. This information is published on our website so there will be no requirement to inform the applicant prior to issue.
