Question regarding spouse visa

Post by ppakash1987 » Sat Nov 21, 2020 5:24 pm

I have an offer to work as a researcher at a leading Irish University. I am currently residing in the US and will apply for an Irish visa from here. My wife is currently residing in India. Can both of our visa applications be processed simultaneously or would I have to go to Ireland first and then get her a spouse visa. Can anyone with a similar experience share theirs.

Persons who have a valid hosting agreement can bring their nuclear family with them.

If you live together, you will be able to submit both visa applications together.

However, a major problem here is that you and your wife aren't living together - not even in the same country. This means, you will submit your Employment Visa in the US, while your wife needs to submit her Join Family visa in India.

While this is still possible, it can bring quite some challenges when processing your wife's visa, as the embassy in each country will likely not know details in the other visa application. In addition, because the two visa applications won't be submitted together, your visa application will likely be approved way much faster than your wife's, so you will very likely come to Ireland a few months earlier than your wife anyway.

Thank you for your reply littlerr.

On a related question, if my wife were to apply for a visa from India, and if she is granted the spose visa, is there a time duration within which she needs to make her first travel to Ireland? There are some rules in other countries which typically prescribe a period of 1 year within which the applicant has to reach the country. Are you aware of any similar rule in Ireland?

Most long-stay entry visas are valid for 3 months. So from the date your visa is approved, you have 3 months to enter Ireland. This will be the case for both your wife and you.

I just read the New Delhi embassy website and it says for applicants who are 'joining a family member already in Ireland who holds a Critical Skills Employment permit', it takes only 3 weeks, so maybe it's not that bad at all. (Be aware though that this could be partially because the volume of foreign travel has been significantly reduced at the moment.)
