UK Tier 2 visa to visitor visa

I am an American who was working in the UK for the past two years on a tier 2 general work visa. I resigned from my job in October and returned to the US in December a day before the visa expired. I am not working now, and would like to visit my boyfriend in the UK (who is a UK citizen) for up to 6 months. I do not have any intention of working or studying in the UK while visiting, and am able to provide return travel documentation as well as proof of sufficient financing during my stay.

Being a US citizen I do not need to apply for a visitor visa prior to travel, but I am concerned that due to my previous two years of residence in the UK I may be denied entry as a visitor. I have not been able to find examples of this situation online, and while it seems technically feasible given the UK government's visa guidelines, I would like to be certain of being granted entry at the border.

Could anyone please advise on likelihood of denied entry, or amount of time I should spend outside of the UK to be granted visitor entry? Many thanks.

Main thing is to convince entry officer you will be leaving - so dated return ticket, your own funds, staying just a few weeks - "up to 6 months" and "staying with boyfriend" may invite the entry officer's curiosity. Having had a previous work visa without any issues may perhaps be helpful. This is just from my reading of this forum - others may provide deeper insight.
