Moving back to the States

Post by adamred73 » Tue Feb 16, 2021 12:32 pm

Good afternoon. My wife who is a British citizen and myself are planning on moving back to the US, where I'm from. I've been living in the UK for the past 21 years on an Indefinite leave visa. What I would like to know is, that for if some reason we struggle to make it work in the US, how long can I keep my indefinite visa before I have to surrender it and start the whole process over to come back to the UK?

Thank you for your time,
Adam

Hello

If you are unsure about your future plans, you can apply for British citizenship. You'll not lose your US citizenship and it will give you more peace of mind as you can return freely.

Otherwise, with an ILR you can be away up to 2 years. Some people keep for longer by coming back regularly to the UK but you can't do that indefinitely.

Thank you for your reply. A British passport is something we had considered. Maybe we will look into that a little more. Thanks again.
