Travel with EU settlement scheme permanent resident permit

Post by Tochim » Sat Feb 27, 2021 12:12 pm

I traveled out of UK via Paris on the 24th of January, 2021 without transit visa to France. On my way back on the 5th of February 2021, I was refused entry back into France by KLM/AirFrance. Their reason is that I needed transit visa if I have Nigerian passport, even though I have European Union permanent resident settled scheme status in UK. I agued with the airline because since two years, I have been traveling without transit visa to any EU country without any issue. But they still did not allow me to board my flight. I was told that EU(France and Netherlands) took a decision on 31st of January to stop any UK resident without transit visa without pre warning.

Please guys, is this what it is now? Even with EU settlement scheme, we must apply for transit visa to enter EU countries? Why EU settlement scheme then?
Please advice me
thanks

So you can stay legally in the UK, which is not part of the EU.

At that time, the UK was in the EU and the specific documentation that you may have had was recognised by the EU, because it was issued under EU law (which the UK was part of at the time).

The Settled Status scheme is not a part of EU law, but is issued under domestic UK law and is therefore recognised only within the UK. It provides for EU citizens and their family members to live in the UK after Brexit (thence the name), but is a purely domestic (i.e. within the UK) status, the same as regular ILR or visas issued to other people living in the UK.

If you wish to travel to or through the EU now, after 31st December 2020, you will need to apply for the relevant visa, unless you are a family member of a current EEA citizen travelling with you on that journey.
