Internship

Post by ppaveld » Wed Oct 01, 2008 12:17 pm

I'm non-eu student studying towards my 4 year degree. Now i'm in 3rd year and i have my work placement in second semester. I wonder if i would be allowed to work as I'm on stamp 2 which only allows me to work 20 hours per week?

When work is required for your degree, you will be granted permission to work. I would contact the GNIB to be sure you don't need an adjustment to your stamp.

You dont need to do anything, your permission to remain as a student is sufficient to complete an internship, provided your permission remains current. There is no restrictions on time worked either, so you can work full time.

There have been issues in the past with the GNIB denying a student visa/stamp renewal to students who took up interships that were an integral part of their degree. However, the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) has worked this out with the GNIB. According to the ICOS website, article published in June 2008:
Regarding internships, the GNIB has informed ICOS that currently and until such time as new regulations are in place, students with a Stamp 2 who are already enrolled on courses with mandatory internship components will be entitled to take up paid full-time work in companies approved by their HEI. The GNIB, however, could not say if this position will remain the same following the comprehensive review of the position of non-EEA students which is currently being carried out by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
Your friend should be good for now, but depending on the new immigration bill, it may change once that is passed. So, if it is just for this year, then there should be no worries.

Best of luck!

thanks for replies, lads.
my internship starts in Jan-Mar and is over in August. hope new immigration bill wont be passed be that time. Although I don’t see them restricting non-eu students to take part in work placement if it’s mandatory requirement.

My source is my personal experience being closely associated with a University in Dublin.

But iamwhoever answered your question.

An update to my story:
Had an interview with well known chip manufacturing company and was rejected based on my immigration status.

If this is a requirement for you degree and approved by your university, I would contact them. You shouldn't be refused on that basis for a required internship.

Basically, they said that they cant hire me cause my stamp says that i can work only 20 hours a week. I gave them a link to the website but it's not good enough for them, they need official proof that im allowed to work. I will try to contact my local immigration officer and see what he thinks but i doubt he will help me cause he is a d**khead.
