Do you have any non-British passport?

A problem is that HMPO prefers both British and foreign passports to have the same names.

You may want to change the name in your non-British passport before applying for a British passport with your new name.

As mentioned above, the Passport Office expect the names in all your British and non-British passports to match.

I think (not sure) that they would allow a different name in your British passport from your non-British passport if you can prove that you attempted to have your name changed in your non-British passport and failed (such as if the embassy of your other nationality in the UK refused to recognise your name change, etc).
