Register child born outside UK as British Citizen

Post by gar-mrg » Fri Jul 16, 2021 12:52 am

Hi there,

I came to the UK in 2010 and became British citizen thru naturalisation in 2019. My wife and my 2 kids, one of whom was born outside UK before we migrated to the UK, are all on ILR. I now wanted to register my kids as British Citizens however, for my first child who was born outside I am stuck on following question and need help. I selected option 2 but then in the documents section it asks for following proof

“Evidence that Mr ABC’s British parent lived in the UK for a period of 3 years at some time before ABC’s birth” which is not correct as the child was born outside when we were yet to migrate to the UK. Please help

Questions/Options:

Choose which category to apply under. You are a child under 18 and:

1. Your parent is British by descent and lived in the UK or a British Overseas territory for at least 3 years before you were born

2. Your parent is British by descent and you and your parents (unless they are legally separated) are now living in the UK or a British Overseas territory

3. You were born on or after 13 January 2010 and your parent was serving in the UK armed forces

4. You were adopted abroad by British citizen parents

5. You were born before 1 July 2006 to a British father and your parents were not married

6. One or both of your parents is applying for British citizenship

7. Other - apply at the discretion of the Home Secretary

Thanks,
GAR

Option 2 is the wrong choice as you (Mr. ABC's parent) are not a British citizen by descent if you have naturalised.

Choose Option 7.

Thank you Simon! That’s what I thought initially but got confused after reading on another site that naturalisation is considered a British Citizen by descent. Thanks for clarifying!

A naturalised person is considered a "British citizen otherwise than by descent", the opposite of a "British citizen by descent".
