Settled status application

Hello, it could be a silly question but how did you calculate 5 continuous years and apply for settled status?

Did you start to calculate from the first day in UK or from the day you could prove your address or you applied before completing 5 years as it takes months for Home office to process your application?

Our (with 2 children) 5th year in the UK will be completed in a few months so I would like to apply when possible not to lose any extra time.

My example

I had my travel itinerary (with my spouse)

My first proof of address was after 8 months
