financial requirement spouse visa extension

hi.i got a query.if someone can help me with that it will be great.can both partners combine their self employed earnings to fulfill the financial requirement to get a spouse visa extension after 2.5 years on a 5 year route to settlement.because i read somewhere that if husband and wife both are selfemployed they cant combine their income from both their selfemployment to extend spouse visa.only one of them can use their selfemployed income.is that true????
