Live/Study/Work other EU countries with UK Criminal Record

Post by europian » Thu Oct 23, 2008 12:26 am

Hello, I am a UK citizen with a number of criminal convictions, all spent under the rehabilitation of offenders (i.e more than 5 years ago) act in the UK but still on records. Would this be a problem for studing and working in other EU nations? Is it reasonable grounds to deny a studying visa? Also can I take my kitten, Simba?

Err...if you are a UK citizen you don't need a visa to live/study/work anywhere in the EU (except, I believe, new EU countries). So you should be ok. For certain jobs/courses where you need a CRB, of course you would have to disclose your criminal record (e.g. if you want to work as a police officer, or study social work). Generally, a criminal conviction does not preclude you from free movement (although it depends what conviction we are talking about...murder, rape, etc?).

As for your kitten....s/he can travel with you. I know that, for dogs, they need an 'animal passport', but for cats I do not know. Just make sure that s/he has all the necessary medical checks (e.g. if you are moving to a much hotter climate like Greece). Also, pet insurance - it might differ in other EU countries so be sure to check that out before arriving at your destination.

Information about pet travel (including cats) can be found on the DEFRA website here.

As far as I know, pet animals can travel to EU countries (and a number of non-EU countries) and re-enter the UK without needing a passport. Your vet would be able to advise further.

Good luck with it all!
