Referee's passport expire

Hi everyone, if you think you could help please reply and will be much appreciated

I'm in the process of applying for BC, I've got everything ready to submit my application, just one question here.

I've got one of my of my friends can act as a professional referee they are a nurse but there passport is expired, will it be OK to provide there expired passport number or will it be a problem or shall I try to find another referee.

the wording for referees on Form AN is:
Current British citizen passport number (if any):

It is not mandatory for British citizens to have passports at all. Suggest the referee gives his or her expired passport number and notes that it has expired
