There's no absence limit for spouse route. Head ache comes from cohabitation documents. The purpose of the route is for the spouse to stay in and have life in UK. If considerable time is spent outside the the purpose of the spouse visa is negated.

Absences from the UK on any leave to remain (whether indefinite or limited) should not exceed 24 months.

Also keep in mind that excessive absences from the UK will impact any natuarsalition application down the line, as there is a mandatory/non-discretionalry requirement for the applicant to be physically present in the UK exactly three years or five years before the date of the naturalisation application.

So a year or longer absence from the UK can have a major impact three or five years later if that is the time that the natursalition application is due.
