First Adult passport application

In a few days, I will attend my citizenship ceremony, where I will finally recieve my certificate of naturalization.

I was wondering if I could send my passport application and ask HMPO to send (at least) my passport back, since I have to travel a few days before Christmas.

Alternatively, if I'm unable to get my passport back in time, could I still return to the UK using my EU ID card, even though it isn't recognised as a travel document any more?
