US student visa

Post by rogerroger » Sat May 14, 2005 6:56 pm

do you think a person can get a US visa on one I 20 and then use the same Visa to go to another University

is it also possible for a person to schedule 2 visa appointments...an F1(student) and B1(WSinga) together on different dates and then choose between one of them

I am not an expert but here is what I think:

Well I KNOW that you can't use same visa to go to another university. You can apply for new I-20 and move to another university without having to get a new visa IF YOU are already in the US though.

I am not sure about 2 appointments, but as far as I know you do not need an appointment if you're seeking F1 visa.

1. You need an individual I-20 (SEVIS issued) for any academic institution you attend. Your F-1 visa covers you for any institution either upon entry or where you change institution. Naturally both requires that you remain in status throughout which means maintaining (as a minimum) the required course credits (full load) as applicable.

2. You can apply for both F1 and B1/2 visas but why are you doing this? The consular officer will want to understand your reasoning as they have their respective characteristics despite being both non immigrant visas e.g. they have different admission lengths on Form I-94 with B1/B2 6 months and F-1 usually for the duration of your student status. You may change status (but not your visa) from B1 to F1 in the US only if you have notified the inspector at the port of entry that you are in the US looking for schools and in indeed find one..saves you the trouble of going back home......they will record this accordingly.
