Can I apply for Irish citizenship as a Belgian national - have lived here for 10+ yrs

Post by MAM91 » Sun Feb 27, 2022 1:41 pm

Hi all, have search online but cannot find a definitive answer on this as all searches seem to jump back to gaining citizenship through a spouse.

As per the title, I am a Belgian citizen and I have been living in Ireland for the last 12 years (homeowner, employed etc).

I would like to know if it is possible for me to apply for Irish citizenship - I do have an Irish partner however we are not married.

I have also lived in Belfast, N. Ireland this whole time and would like to know if this is an issue as it is UK or if it is OK as it is still the island of Ireland?

Many thanks in advanced for any help

You can if you have lived in the Republic of Ireland for the last 12 months, plus another 4 years in the 8-year prior to that.

Residence in Northern Ireland can be counted if and only if you have been married to an Irish National spouse for 3 years, and have been living together in that address in Northern Ireland.

Thanks for that - that was my main concern as I have been living in N. Ireland - so looks like there is no option for me to gain Irish citizenship at this point :(

Surely you can get a UK citizenship? Your Belgian passport is sufficient for living anywhere in the EU anyway.
