Remote working from another country while on ILR

Post by PI2022 » Mon Mar 07, 2022 8:04 am

I have an ILR. My job is home-based for a UK employer. Can I work remotely from a different country (India) for a few months (5)? If yes, what is the maximum period I can work from a different country? Are there any forms to fill or permissions that I need to obtain? My employer does not have any objections but I would like to find out about the legal aspect.

If you are on ILR you are free to arrange your employment as you wish - no permissions needed.
ILR will lapse if you have been out of country for two years or more, and a "returning resident" visa may be required.

In addition to @alterhase58's advice above, keep in mind that even if you are working for a UK organisation, if you are living abroad, that counts as an absence from the UK for the purpose of any future naturalisation application. So if you plan to apply for naturalisation, plan your absences from the UK accordingly.

Also, note that short visits to the UK may NOT help with keeping your ILR status: general-uk-immigration-forum/keeping-il ... l#p2037249
