What happens if 6 weeks abroad after submitting citizenship application?

Post by glemaron » Wed Mar 09, 2022 6:36 pm

Non-EU/UK nationals who took a long trip overseas while their Irish citizenship application was being processed, did you notify the ISD and explain why? What happened as a result?

This site: https://www.irishimmigration.ie/how-to- ... alisation/ says "If you are outside the State for longer than 6 weeks after you submit your application, you must notify ISD by letter or email to explain why"

I can guess at a few things that could happen:

1. Maybe ISD puts the application on hold during that period so as not to make urgent requests for documents while you are away, making the application takes longer?

2. Maybe ISD uses the notification of the absence as an excuse to deny the application for "not being resident"?

3. If you don't notify the ISD, maybe they later query airline passenger information and deny applications for people who were away for too long?

The worrying bit is that 6 weeks does not line up with the 28 days given to answer letters, but with the requirement to be absent no more than 6 weeks *before* applying (with exception only for emergencies).

So, past experience from people here would be helpful.
