thanks for quick reply.
What if the removal/deportation letter is sent on the basis of wrong facts or misunderstandings. In my case the letter sent to me was ".....as your work permit was refused and your leave to remain expired on sept.2001 you must leave country within 28 days.there is no right of appeal...." which is completely illogical as from aug 2001 HO held my passport before finally losing it and eventually informing about that on dec 2005.Also,I presume HO might subsequently understood this as after making new passport which was after the letter, i was approved segs and then student visa within the U.K.
confused

Do you have any proof of posting the application in 2001? You can do a Subject Access Request to find out what documents the HO have on you. Did you get a letter saying that your 2001 application was refused?

No I have neither received an acknowledgement nor any letter of any kind since i submitted my application in 2001.The only letter i received was in 2005 notifying me about the loss of my passport.

Try to do a Subject Access Request then. You'll see if they've got your application on file. You need proof of receipt of your application to use Section 3(c) of the immigration rules that makes that period legal.
