UK issued EU Residence Card-Is visa required to visit France

Post by man_made_borders » Mon Nov 10, 2008 8:49 pm

Hello,

I am a non eu national married to a Irish national. I hold a EU residence card issued by the UK home office. I am planning to visit France for a short holiday. I have read conflicting posts suggesting that I may or may not require a visa.

Do I need a visa for France?

Thanks.

What is your nationality? You may have read some posts where family members in possession of a UK Residence Card have travelled to France successfully w/out holding a schengen visa. However, as it is unclear whether the EU Directive has been fully implemented by the French I would advise that you apply for a Schengen visa from the French embassy to be on the safe side. I recently applied (as the spouse of a Swiss national & holder of a UK residence Card) and it was quite hassle-free.

You would ordinarily require a visa for France anyway. Nonetheless as I said earlier, to avoid any delays to your journey and arguments with airline boarding staff/Immigration Officers/boarder guards, do apply for a schengen visa from the French embassy. From the info on their site you should receive it same day and free of charge too.

I checked on the French embassy UK website. The residence card holders have to get an appointment in the afterrnon. I cannot get any appointments in November as it is fully booked. I am now thinking of going somewhere else on holiday.

Thanks for your posts.

You don't need a visa for the Isle of Wight!

You have to keep watch over the online appointments. Sometimes a couple of days (afternoons) are freed up due to cancellations. Or as Casa suggested... The Isle of Wight? :)
