BRP Card Expiry

Post by Roy W » Sat Jul 09, 2022 10:53 am

Does anyone can advise me?

When I got the UK ILR, the UK just introduced the BRP card. Mine is expiring soon, and my original non UK passport which was filled in the ILR application expired and I have got a new one.

1. Do I have to renew the BRP card even though I have no plan to use it in the foreseeable future? Or the ILR will be stripped/revoked if the BRP card is not renewed?

2. Do I need to link the new non-British passport to the BRP/ILR? (Presumably not only ILR, but when it comes to British citizenship, you also need to update the non British passport information upon renewal?)

Thank you!

2. Do I need to link the new non-British passport to the BRP/ILR? (Presumably not only ILR, but when it comes to British citizenship, you also need to update the non British passport information upon renewal?)No linking to passport, and once you are British your ILR is no longer valid/needed, as British citizens can't have an immigration status.

Thank you!

Thank you!

In that case, if someone enters the UK with the non UK passport to which the ILR is issued after the UK citizenship is granted, what would happen? Since the UK allows dual citizenship, they probably expect this could happen?

Actually, now British passport is not so superior to my original non UK passport because of the Brexit, I will have no intention to apply for British passport if I get the citizenship. (Just want to vote)

First issue: if you are a visa national the carrier will want to see a visa or residence card. Second issue: if you manage to get to the UK Border they will likely confiscate your BRP if you kept that after naturalisation. If you are travelling with a foreign passport you need proof of British citizenship, either your naturalisation certificate, or a Certificate of Entitlement stamped in your passport (fee about £300). British passport is about £80 for ten years .... personally I'd recommend the passport as it's not just useful for travelling and voting, it's the easiest way of proving your status inside the UK, if you have to.

Actually, now British passport is not so superior to my original non UK passport because of the Brexit, I will have no intention to apply for British passport if I get the citizenship. (Just want to vote)

Oh I see! It's clear. Since I have access to eGates with my original passport and now the UK is no longer a EU member state, I have been deciding if I should apply for the citizenship or not because I don't see any particular benefits with British citizenship.

I know a friend of mine was using a non EU/UK passport with a BRP (ILR) card after naturalisation without any issue. But it seems no longer possible, I was a bit confused.
